I create ambiguous experiences by merging iconographic elements from my two religious cultures, Catholicism and Judaism, together into one ritual. In this specific ritual, there are 50 handmade ceramic hamsa candles. For me, the hamsa represents universal faith and specifically Jewish culture. Lighting votive candles is an important practice in Catholicism that I call upon in my new ritual. The colors white and blue unite Judaism and Catholicism, as they both represent similar ideas of the ocean, stability, and purity. In this work, I raise questions about contemporary religion and its function in current society. For example, why is it so easy to take common practices and symbols, like hamsas, pilgrimage, and votives, and create something that reads as ritualistic? What does this say about how the western world views and interacts with religion?
