Using erasure, I edit out religious terms from completed New York Times crossword puzzles to create new puzzles for viewers to solve. The religious terms can be discovered using the clues from the corresponding up or down, partially completed answers. The discovery of an erased term, for example “Ramadan,” raises questions about how much American society really understands about non-western religions. An associative meaning of the word is revealed, based in false knowledge and perpetuated by prejudices in America. An important religious holiday just becomes a word in the English language, created by other arbitrary words in the puzzle.
